Bio: Robert Hunter is best known as a non-performing lyricist for the Grateful Dead.
Hunter began contributing lyrics to the Dead at the invitation of his friend, Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia, as of the group's third album, Aoxomoxoa, in 1969.
Since then, he wrote some of the Dead's most memorable words, including "Truckin'" ("What a long, strange trip it's been") and the 1987 comeback hit "Touch of Grey." Hunter began recording solo albums on the Dead's record label in 1974 and continued sporadically since.

 [minstrels] Ripple -- Robert Hunter
Hunter begins the verse by invoking the elements of song: words and tune, so that the listener is prepared to think about the song.
The next verse continues this theme, but points out that the identification between singer and listener can never be total, since it is questionable whether any of the original poet's thoughts will actually occur to the person who is now singing the song.
Hunter chose an Asian verse form to express this idea, which is contrary to Western civilization's principle of logical, rational thought: it is not worthwhile to believe that reason can be imposed on thinking, or that anything reasonable can come from thinking, since communication of thought will always be flawed.

Aoxomoxoa [Bonus Tracks] - Grateful Dead, Music Downloads - Online
This was primarily the net result of the budding relationship between primary (by default) melodic contributor Jerry Garcia (guitar/vocals) and Robert Hunter (lyrics), who began his nearly 30-year association with the Grateful Dead in earnest during these sessions.
When the LP hit the racks in the early summer of 1969, Deadheads were greeted by some of the freshest and most innovative sounds to develop from the thriving Bay Area music scene.
This is unfortunate, as Hunter's surreal lyrics and Garcia's understated vocals languish beneath the soupy sonics.

at the request of his friend, jerry garcia, hunter started writing lyrics for the dead starting in 1969 with their third album, "aoxomoxoa." he is thus responsible for some of the most memorable and poetic lyrics in rock.
it's probably a more consistent, listenable album than hunter's debut, "tales Of the great rum runners." hunter sings in a somewhat more natural, assured voice on these mostly country-flavored tracks that sometimes recall "workingman's dead" and "american beauty," though he will admit that he's not a great singer.
despite his vocal improvement, hunter took the occasion of a rykodisc reissue in 1989 to record new vocals over the instrumental tracks.
