Robert Hupka (August 26 1919 – July 3 2001) was a recording engineer for RCA and later for Columbia Records.
Hupka took thousands of hidden photographs of conductor Arturo Toscanini while Toscanini was leading the NBC Symphony Orchestra.
Hupka is also the author of Michelangelo: Pieta, a collection of a hundred photographs, from various angles and with different lighting, of Michelangelo Buonarroti 's Pieta.

From the time the statue was uncrated in April of 1964, to the time the ship carrying the statue back to Italy vanished from his sight in November of 1965, he took thousands of pictures.
Hupka collected a hundred and fifty of these photographs in his book, Michelangelo: Pieta, seven of which I have included in the book you are now reading.
Hupka's book has a paragraph-long introduction and a two-and-a-half-page conclusion.

Hupka, der im Juli 2001 verstorben ist, hatte 1964 als einziger Fotograf die Gelegenheit, bei der Weltausstellung in New York insgesamt 5.000 Bilder der Pieta' aus den unterschiedlichsten Blickwinkeln anzufertigen.
Hupkas Michelangelo-Zyklus wurde erstmals 1976, vier Jahre, nachdem die Pieta' in Rom von einem Attentäter mit 21 Hammerschlägen schwerst beschädigt wurde und seither nach ihrer Restaurierung nur mehr aus großer Entfernung im Petersdom in Rom zu sehen ist, in Ohio mit großem Erfolg ausgestellt.
In den sechziger Jahren veröffentlichte Hupka den Bildband "This was Toscanini", der ihn berühmt machte.
