Robert II of France - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Robert II the Pious (French: Robert II le Pieux) (March 27, 972 - July 20, 1031) was King of France from 996 to 1031.
A member of the Capetian Dynasty, Robert II was born on March 27, 972 in Orléans, France, the son of King Hugh Capet (938-996) and Adelaide of Aquitaine (952-1004).
The kingdom Robert inherited was not large, and in an effort to increase his power, he vigorously pursued his claim to any of the feudal lands as they became vacant which action usually resulted in war with a counter-claimant.

Robert I of France - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He did not claim the crown of Western Francia when his brother died in 898; but recognizing the supremacy of the Carolingian king, Charles III, the Simple, he was confirmed in his offices and possessions, after which he continued to defend northern Francia from the attacks of the Normans.
Collecting an army, Charles marched against the usurper, and on June 15 923, in a stubborn and sanguinary battle near Soissons, Robert was killed, according to one tradition in single combat with his rival.
Robert left a son, Hugh the Great, duke of the Franks, and his grandson was Hugh Capet, king of France.

H-France Reviews   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Robert Young's France and the Origins of the Second World War is a thoughtfully conceived, elegantly written, humane attempt to inject a therapeutic dose of nuance and complexity into a historiographical controversy which has long been marked by simplistic interpretations.
France enjoyed a short artificial preponderance, thanks to the temporary military absence of Germany and Russia, a briefly large army, the Rhineland occupation, reparations coal and five-year economic treaty clauses, the gradualness of Anglo-American diplomatic withdrawal, and Germany's apparent prostration and disarmament.
France's choices were ever of this nature between the wars, with its options progressively narrowed as both domestic and international politics severely constrained even its choice of dependencies.

France finds many Harvard buildings deficient in this regard, although one sign of a rising ecological consciousness is the retrofitting of a "green roof" on top of 29 Garden St., formerly Harvard Police headquarters, now a housing complex for graduate students.
France hopes that when the University designs new buildings for its Allston campus, it will learn from past mistakes and make integrated water management one of its primary concerns.

 Nuke France by Robert Higgs
Only a few days ago, in an exclusive interview given to reporters for Time, the iron-fisted tyrant known in his own country as "Le Bulldozer" said, "France is not a pacifist country." Few could miss the implied threat to US security in that naked declaration.
Unlike Iraq, which lacks effective capacity to deliver WMDs to the United States even if it possessed them, France has not only developed a panoply of such devastating weapons, but it has built and deployed high-tech missiles, aircraft, surface vessels, and submarines to deliver warheads powerful enough to wreak unimaginable destruction on the United States.
France is developing a new SLMB, the M51, which will replace the M45, carry as many as six warheads each, and possess a range of 8,000-10,000 kilometers (in contrast to Iraq’s ridiculous Scuds, which are little more than flying tin cans of limited range and highly dubious accuracy).

Notes: Mary FOSTER - Robert I Of FRANCE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
His lordship over many fiefs around Paris and Orléans made him the virtual ruler of France, and when King Louis V of France, the last of the Carolingian line, died without an heir in 987, Hugh's numerous vassals enabled him to win the election to the throne, defeating the Carolingian candidate, Charles, duke of Lorraine.
Charles and many other great nobles of the realm attempted to resist his authority but, through force of arms and by judicious purchasing of allegiance, as well as through the support of the church, of which he was a devout member, Hugh established a measure of order within his kingdom.
He had his son, Robert the Pious (later Robert II), elected and crowned his associate and successor in 988, thereby confirming the house of Capet, which ruled France until 1328.

Bright Lights Film Journal | Robert Bresson
In painting, the idea that Walter Keane is a greater artist than Robert Rauschenberg because many a 1960s tract house had a Walter Keane painting in it would be laughingly dismissed.
The most notable victim here may be French director Robert Bresson, whose work can be judged anew by those able to access it, thanks to newly struck, cleaned-up prints that recently (1998) made the rounds of repertory (Toronto's Cinematheque and Berkeley's Pacific Film Archive for starters).
Bresson, born in 1901, is a true anomaly even by the exacting standards of intransigent auteurs a la Sternberg or Carl Dreyer.
