Bye enlisted in the Welsh guards in April 1915; he was described as “a robust character” and was a member of the battalion boxing team.
From his citation: “On 31st July, 1917 at the Yser Canal, Belgium, during an attack, Sergeant Bye saw that the leading waves were being troubled by two enemy block houses.
During the action he accounted for over 70 of the enemy.” Bye was discharged in 1919 but soon re-enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters regiment; he was discharged again in 1921 on medical grounds.

James was a nonconformist and tended to be politically and socially incorrect, always marching to his own drummer.
James used part of the money ($5.00, to be exact), to purchase his first automobile — a model T. When James had complained that the mechanical drawing he was required to do in manual arts class was too elementary, the instructor showed him one of his own college drawings which had been graded 100% correct.
James used $5 of it to purchase his first automobile, a Model-T. Note the details of the spiral legs, which were all hand carved.

 Playbill News: Kennedy Center Says Bye Bye to Birdie Revival
The Kennedy Center has removed the upcoming revival of Bye Bye Birdie from its 2004-2005 theatre season.
Bye Bye Birdie debuted on Broadway April 14, 1960, at the Martin Beck Theatre, running 607 performances on The Great White Way before closing Oct. 7, 1961.
The upcoming season at the Washington, DC, institution begins with James Earl Jones and Diahann Carroll in a staged reading of Ernest Thompson's On Golden Pond at the Eisenhower Theatre in fall 2004.
