Even if Matthews takes no tax deduction for donating the speaking fees to charity, and even if the charities are legitimate and not money laundering operations like some of the Santorum, Delay, and Abramoff charities apparently are, the speaking is inappropriate on three counts.
Matthews is able to use these speaking engagments to court potential sponsors for his and other MSNBC shows.
That Matthews is listed on a speakers bureau page as accepting fees is not necessarily proof after all that he takes money from them.

But Jay had a profession before radio, and it's a calling that apparently sees a spike in business this time of year, judging by the food that is consumed at the fair over the next couple of weeks.
I also wonder if Matthews feels that the suicide bombers that have wreaked so much death and destruction over the years in Israel, the ones whose families were paid by Saddam Hussein $25,000 each for their troubles, were considered a strategic threat to Israel.
Matthews doesn't just not believe a nuclear-armed Iran to be a threat, he cannot even fathom the thinking that goes on in the head of anyone that does.

Open Letter To Chris Matthews: Frequently Asked Questions
Chris Matthews is a major opinion leader who has repeatedly compared Americans concerned about the war in Iraq to Osama bin Laden, a charge that borders on accusing over half the American public with treason.
Matthews is perceived, wrongly, as a responsible and objective mainstream journalist with a reputation for calling it as he sees it.
Chris Matthews and the senior management of MSNBC need to publicly apologize for comparing patriotic American critics of the war in Iraq to terrorist Osama bin Laden, and both must commit to stop functioning as an adjunct of the right-wing noise machine and to start acting like objective journalists.

 Iain Matthews
Matthews, who’d begun to play guitar during the his days with Fairport, “but only at home and quite spastically,” wanted to contribute to the writing himself, and was concerned that Howard and Blaikley’s reputation as pop Svengalis might hurt the album’s reception.
Matthews had been struggling for nearly 15 years now and was still living hand to mouth, with nothing to show for his efforts but a string of out-of-print albums, and the loyalty of those musicians and fans who shared his vision.
Matthews was the major contributor of material for Dark Side of the Room (1992), remaking his own “And Me” as “Say a Prayer,” and writing “Towie” with Griffiths and “Unusual Girl” with Dawson (heard here in a dance mix that Line records vetoed as a single).

Another tax protester who followed Matthews' path of armed rebellion was Ardie McBrearty, the founder in 1974 of the United States Taxpayers Union, a group dedicated not only to repealing the 16th Amendment, but also to abolishing the Occupational Safety and Health Act, consumer protection statutes, gun control laws, and other "unconstitutional" legislation.

Jay, you really need to explain precisely why an extemporaneous "damning" statement that was immediately retracted upon being challenged is worthy of so much attention---and why you have yet to take the rightloons like Hewitt to task for ignoring the evidence that the US military has detained and tortured journalists in Iraq.
Let's just agree here that Jay is hopeless hack, that he is in league with scoundrels with whom he only pretends to disagree, and that his status as professor of journalism gives him no grounds whatsoever to set himself up as "some sort of 'intellectual/academic' authority" on that subject.
