 Telegraph News Robert Forward
Robert Forward, who died last Saturday aged 70, was a science fiction writer who turned to the genre after a career as a scientist specialising in "exotic physics", space propulsion and gravitation.
Robert Lull Forward was born at Geneva, New York, on August 15 1932, and educated at the University of Maryland, from which he graduated in Physics in 1954.
Forward, an unmissable sight at science fiction conventions in his bespoke suit, white shirt and bow tie, and the coloured waistcoats run up by his wife (he had a couple of dozen), maintained a holiday home in Reay, between Wick and Thurso in the far north of Scotland, for the last 15 years.

 Robert L. Forward (1932-2002)
Forward was one of the early pioneers in the field of experimental gravitational radiation astronomy.
Forward also published the first paper showing that it was possible to build and operate a laser interferometer gravitational radiation antenna that was photon noise limited over the band from 1-20 kHz, and that further improvements in gravitational strain sensitivity needed only more laser power and longer lengths in the interferometer arms.
Forward was a true pioneer, a scientist and engineer who conceived many nuts-and-bolts real-world concepts for such science-fiction entities as antimatter engines, wormholes, and time travel.

 Forward, Robert L
I think Forward was merely trying to say that in the future men and women won't necessarily have the same appearances that they do now, probably because a lot of SF either ignores the issue or just assumes people will go on looking the same.
Forward, too, is a fairly well-known scientist, with a PhD in Gravitational Physics, lots of patents, a successful consulting company, etc..
I first came across Forward twenty-odd years ago (longer, if you count Larry Niven's literary references to him) in the pages of Analog, when that magazine published some extracts from "Dragon's Egg", his first novel.

The Singing Diamond by Robert L. Forward
Robert L. Forward is a Ph.D. who has specialized in gravitational physics; until his early retirement he was employed for most of his career as a researcher in industry.
Physics, astronomy and space technology are Forward's playgrounds, and he is generally at his best in Hal Clement territory, describing carefully conceived alien settings and beings in the clear, unornamented prose of science writing.
Then it occurred to Forward that he could do it himself, and he wrote the novel Dragon's Egg (1980), hard sf in the tradition of Hal Clement that made him world-famous with his first book.

The SF Site Featured Review: Saturn Rukh
Robert L. Forward's hard SF novel, Saturn Rukh, sees a multi-national consortium send a team of six astronauts to mine precious meta, a helium fuel source, from the Saturnian atmosphere.
Unfortunately, there is little suspense in their activities because, based on his plotting throughout the novel, Forward has made it apparent that he is willing to allow his characters to suddenly remember things that they all should have known the entire time.
Apparently, none of the crew members have taken time to read the literature on their spacecraft, the mission, or their destination since Forward constantly is having characters explaining to each other, as a form of data dump, what the mission is, Saturn's parameters and the abilities of their equipment.
