 washingtonpost.com: China Rising
Kuhn, a managing director at Smith Barney/Citigroup and host of the PBS series "Closer to Truth," argues that Jiang was "habitually underestimated" by Chinese and foreigners alike.
What Kuhn does not tell the reader is that the poem was published on the front page of the People's Daily in late May 2001, when Jiang was locked in a power struggle with party elders and trying, in his own way, to create a mini-cult of personality around himself.
Kuhn also does not note that Jiang's minions in Shanghai immediately included the poem in a textbook for students there, marking the first time since the days of Chairman Mao that students would study the poetry of a living Chinese leader.

To Robert Lawrence Kuhn, a longtime China observer, understanding the legacy of Jiang Zemin is essential for understanding the challenges of contemporary China.
Kuhn offers insight into how the Japanese occupation during Jiang’s teenage years imprinted his psyche for life, how he became a Communist, and how, decades later, he struggled to transform the Party in the face of withering criticism.
Kuhn shows how Jiang led China through an amazing metamorphosis—from a fretful country destabilized by the turmoil and crackdown in Tiananmen Square into a vibrant nation that became a primary engine of global economic growth.

Kuhn does not define how China has changed since 1989; he makes no attempt to refute alternative explanations for China's boom, such as the role of structural forces or of über-reformer Deng Xiaoping; and he provides only smatterings of inside evidence to show how Jiang's actions led to particular outcomes.
Kuhn quotes an unnamed insider as saying that Jiang's attempts to push Pyongyang usually backfired: "If Jiang called [Kim], he might hang up." Beijing thinks it is getting no credit for attempting to defuse such a difficult situation.

In the suit filed in Superior Court against "Raiders" producer George Lucas and director Steven Spielberg and others, Rader claims archaeologist Robert Lawrence Kuhn wrote a movie treatment several years ago and later reworked it into a screenplay and an unpublished novel about an archaeological explorer.
Rader claims he was developing his own film version of Kuhn's work and that he submitted his project - which he envisioned as a motion picture with a religious theme like the pseudo-documentary "In Search of Noah's Ark" - to International Creative Management talent agency in 1977.
Rader's lawsuit outlines the plot of Kuhn's work "Ark." As in "Raiders," the principal character is an American university professor and archaeologist about 40 years old who is "something of a rogue."
