Robert Lewis entered prison as a teenager, with a 6th Grade reading level, and no prior convictions of any kind.

Lewis remained active in theater in the 1980s and continued to teach a new generation of actors and directors through his Robert Lewis Theatre Workshop.

Robert Lewis returned to New York a year later to restart a Group workshop with Elia Kazan, which they called the Group Theatre Studio.

Lewis died of heart failure November 23, 1997, in New York at the age of 88.
