Robert Lewis Taylor (24 September 1912 – 30 September 1998) was an American author and winner of the 1959 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
Taylor was born in Carbondale, Illinois and attended Southern Illinois Universityfor one year, which now houses his papers.
Taylor's 1958 novel The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters, about a fourteen-year-old and his father in the California gold rush, won the Pulitzer Prize and was purchased for a film, but eventually became a television series instead.

Robert Lewis Taylor, born in Carbondale, Illinois on September 24, 1912 to Roscoe Aaron and Mabel (Bowyer) Taylor, grew up attending local public schools and enrolled for one year at Southern Illinois University, where he did his first professional writing.
Taylor's most successful book was The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters, published in 1958 by Doubleday, which won the 1958 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, and was purchased for a film by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Taylor obviously missed some of the facts, and he probably fiddled with some of the ones he had; I have vague memories of reading somewhere a lighthearted complaint that the book is as much fiction as fact.
But whatever the explanation for Taylor's rapid disappearance from the bookstores, in the specific case of "W.C. Fields: His Follies and Fortunes" it is an injustice as well as a mystery.
What Taylor nicely calls the "grandiose humbug" embodied by the on-screen Fields seems to have been central to the off-screen Fields, but the biographer must deal with deeper and more complex questions about his character and personality.
