Robert Lowry was born on March 28, 1919, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Lowry apparently married either before the war or while on leave, for after his discharge he returned to his "mother and father and sister and [first] wife Bella." A 1948-49 tour of Europe led Lowry to Rome, which was the site of his honeymoon with his second wife, Frankie.
Lowry completed and published The Violent Wedding, but didn't manage to enjoy his achievement long before he landed himself in a psychiatric hospital again: on a drive down to New York, Lowry heard the voice of God telling him that Lowry was God's Christ, and that he, God, was giving Lowry the world.

This beautiful and very popular hymn was written by Rev. Robert Lowry, D.D. He was born in Philadelphia, March 12, 1826, and died at a good old age in 1899.
Dr. Lowry was editor of ten or a dozen of the most popular Sunday-school song-books ever published, and he contributed to these some of their best hymns and tunes.
But Dr. Lowry's most famous hymn is "Shall we gather at the river?" He wrote the words when a pastor in Brooklyn, on a hot July day in 1864.

Whatever his feelings, when Robert Lowry died on this day, November 23, 1899, in Plainfield, New Jersey, it was as a hymnwriter that he was best known; and that is how he is still remembered.
At a Sunday school Centennial in England, the chairman said, "I am told that Dr. Lowry, the author of 'Shall We Gather at the River' is present; we should be glad to hear from him." The moment Robert reached the platform the crowd erupted into uncontrollable applause.
