White graduated with Class 54C in January 1955, and stayed on at Edwards as a working test pilot, flying and evaluating advanced models of the F-86K Sabre, F-89H Scorpion, the new F-102 Delta Dart and the F-105B Thunderchief.
During White's command, evaluation began of a number of other aircraft vital to the Air Force in years to come: The F-15 Air Superiority Fighter, the A-X ground attack aircraft (eventually to become the A-10 of Gulf War fame), and the revolutionary E-3A Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) aircraft.
Robert M. White retired from active duty with the Air Force as a major general, in February 1981.

Robert M. White, the distinguished environmental scientist and engineer who headed the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) from 1983 until June of this year, will be the 1995-96 Karl T. Compton Lecturer.
His appointment was announced by President Charles M. Vest, who said that Dr. White has a "wealth of experience in the world of federal policy affecting engineering and science, as well as expertise and experience in matters regarding the environment.
White, who holds the SM and ScD degrees in meteorology from MIT (his BA in geology is from Harvard), served the nation under five presidents, from 1963-1977, first as chief of the US Weather Bureau and finally as the first administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

White was one of the initial pilots selected for the X-15 program, representing the Air Force in the joint program with NASA, the Navy, and North American Aviation.
The original three aircraft were about 50 ft long with a wingspan of 22 ft. The modified #2 aircraft (X-15A-2 was longer.) They were a missile-shaped vehicles with unusual wedge-shaped vertical tails, thin stubby wings, and unique side fairings that extended along the side of the fuselage.
