Robert's lifelong interests in politics and the well-being of others were fostered at an early age among his parents.
But once again, Robert defied the pundits and carried the support of his constituents through subsequent elections, constituents who recognised the value of retaining such a good constituency MP who could also perform on the national and international stage.
Giving Robert the right to graze his livestock on the common grazings and hold the key to the town gates seems scant reward for what he has done for the people of this county during the last 35 years.

In fact, the voters here have been uncharacteristically constant and have returned Robert Maclennan as the MP in each of the ten elections since he first won the seat for Labour in 1966.
This was somewhat ironic as Mr Maclennan had originally won his seat from the Liberals in 1966 while Dickson Mabon had to carpet-bag to another seat, which he failed narrowly to win, in the face of local Liberal protests.
With the retiral of Bob Maclennan, the Liberal Democrats have chosen one of Scotland's most hated and disgraced classes to contest the seat - an aristocrat, the 3 rd Viscount Thurso, whose grandfather, the first Viscount, was Liberal leader and MP for the constituency from 1922 until 1945.
