When Mertens is asked to name the champion among Belgian champions for short and middle distance, he is certain that one criterion for this distinction must be that the racing results of that champion have to improve from year to year.
As pigeon fanciers, their racing results are what many would call "a dream come true." Mertens goes behind the scenes to reveal the methods and the work behind this achievement...

Chrono-Biographical Sketch: Robert Mertens   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Very little seems to have been written about Mertens in the English language, which is too bad because he was one of the twentieth century's greatest herpetologists.
Mertens traveled widely--seemingly to all places where herps were important elements in the landscape--later releasing monographic reviews of the reptile and amphibian faunas of, among other places, El Salvador, Southwest Africa (Namibia), Australia, Peru, Spain, Germany, the Sunda Islands (Indonesia), and West Pakistan.
He was especially known for his studies on island and tropical reptile forms (extending to their habits, ecology, and biogeography), and for his phylogenetic reconstructions and writings on evolutionary theory.

Idaho Observer: CDA coin dealer unjustly held without bond since April, 2003
Mertens believes that his support of the Weavers at the infamous federal siege at Ruby Ridge near Naples in 1992 is behind the malicious prosecution in his case.
Mertens has been a participating member of the CDA business community for over 20 years and belongs to several local and national business and numismatic associations.
Mertens also claims evidence that his older brother Gordon was brutally murdered in Salmon by corrupt law enforcement officials who stole $150,000 in antiques, gemstones and rare coins in 1982.

 History of the genus Phelsuma
Robert Mertens (1894-1975) was undoubted the authority on Phelsuma for almost 20 years.
From 1954 until 1975, Robert Mertens described not less than 20 new species and subspecies, 13 of them still remain valid after numerous revisions.
During the late 1970's and 1980's it was the German herpetologist Harald Meier, in the footsteps of Robert Mertens, that contributed to the knowledge of the genus with 12 new taxa, obtained during his many travels to the south western Indian Ocean.

That opinion may be mistaken, but as he is the author of the 'revived' name, and the first to apply it in modern times, his view that 'terrestris' and 'floweri' are identical, the latter being a mere junior synonym of the former, cannot simply be ignored.
It was not until 1958, when Heinz Wermuth revised and modified Robert Mertens' earlier (1946) account (with Mertens' agreement), that 'terrestris' effectively replaced 'floweri' as one of the 4 T. graeca sub species on the presumption that 'floweri' was a junior synonym of 'terrestris'.
There is no evidence that at any time Mertens examined specimens of T. graeca derived from the type locality of Oran, Algeria during his comparative 'T. graeca' studies.

CTTC - Observations of Testudo (graeca) ibera in Lycia by Andy C. Highfield
Although Robert Mertens in his 1946 paper considered Testudo ibera a subspecies of the North African T.
This author takes the view that Mertens' hypothesis is invalid on a number of grounds and that Testudo ibera* is a full and biologically separate species from the North African graeca - as indeed it was so designated when first described and named by Pallas in 1814.
Specimens of ibera from higher altitudes tend to exhibit melanistic scute markings, often with a complete absence of the central areola and anterior banding typical of the species.
