Robert Warren Morse, a low-temperature physicist and an authority in underwater sound, a university teacher and administrator, and a naval official, died of emphysema at his home in Falmouth, Massachusetts, on 19 January 2001.
Morse was born in Boston on 25 May 1921 and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1943 with a BS degree in physics.
Morse collaborated with Admiral Hyman Rickover in the development of the NR-1, a small nuclear submarine capable of exploring the ocean floor and thus extremely useful in oceanographic research.

Morse became president of CWRU at its federation July 1, 1967 and served until he started a leave of absence in October 1970.
Morse was widely known for his application of ultrasonic techniques to studying the behavior of electrons in metals, in particular the phenomenon of superconductivity.
Morse received his B.S. from Bowdoin College in 1943, his Sc.M. from Brown University in 1947, and his Ph.D. from Brown in 1949.

Robert W. Morse, a physicist who had been a senior scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, assistant secretary of the Navy, a dean at Brown University and president of Case Western Reserve University, died Friday in Falmouth, Mass.
Professor Morse, whose specialties in physics were superconductivity and underwater acoustics, was a graduate student, professor and chairman of the Physics Department at Brown in Providence, R.I., with a year off as a Fulbright fellow at Cambridge University in England.
In 1962, Professor Morse was appointed dean of the college of Brown University, a position he held until 1964 when President Lyndon Johnson appointed him assistant secretary of the Navy for research and development.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) has established an endowed chair in honor of local resident and former WHOI scientist Robert W. Morse of North Falmouth.  The new chair was established through funds from the Frederick Gardner Cottrell Foundation in Tucson, Arizona.
The permanently endowed chairs at WHOI are awarded for extraordinary accomplishments in marine scientific research and education.  Funds for the chair enable the recipient to work on projects for which traditional grant support is unlikely and can provide some time to explore new ideas or research directions that changing technology has made available.
Morse was educated at Bowdoin College, where he received a bachelor’s degree in 1943, and at Brown University, where he received a master’s degree in 1947 and a doctorate in physics in 1949.

After earning acclaim and another Tony-nomination as the cross-dressing musician on the lam in "Sugar" a Broadway musical version of Some Like It Hot, Morse appeared less and less -- his eccentrics proving both difficult to cast and to deal with.
