Robert S. Mulliken - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Robert Sanderson Mulliken (June 7, 1896 - October 31, 1986) was an American physicist and chemist, primarily responsible for the elaboration of the molecular orbital method of computing the structure of molecules.
Mulliken helped with some of the editorial work when his father wrote his four-volume text on organic compound identification, and thus became an expert on organic chemical nomenclature.
Mulliken's molecular-orbital method, building on the quantitative work of John Lennard-Jones, proved to be more flexible and applicable to a vast variety of types of molecules and molecular fragments, and has totally eclipsed Pauling's valence-bond method.

Robert's strengths were a deep knowledge of molecular spectra and a capacity to invent phenomenological and empirical interpretations; Hund brought quantitative and mathematical insights, a greater mastery of the new theories, and a specific vector model for quantum systems.
Although LMSS and Robert Mulliken himself were a bit too early to participate at the leading edge of introducing the experimental methods that now dominate the field, the opposite was the case regarding the role of computations in molecular science.
Mulliken was not alone by any means in his belief that computational molecular science was a large part of the future of the field.

In 1930, the newly appointed president of MIT, Karl T. Compton, hired Slater to head the Department of Physics, and over the next decade, the two together helped to assemble a department of international repute.
Identifying key areas of interests in physics and luring such talented persons to the university as George Harrison in spectroscopy, Robley Evans in radioactivity, and Robert J. van de Graaf in nuclear physics, Slater helped to guide a remarkable expansion of the department during the height of the Great Depression.
During this period, his own research into the electromagnetic theory of microwaves, conducted with colleagues Julius Stratton and Nathaniel Frank, helped establish the theoretical basis for the development of radar.

Except for Fields' finger injury, none of the inmates suffered broken bones, internal injuries, concussions or apparent loss of consciousness, he said.
