After Connor's death, Parsons and his mother moved in with her parents in Winter Haven, FL; a year after the move, his mother married Robert Parsons, who adopted Gram and the child legally changed his name to Gram Parsons.
By the spring of 1968, Parsons had become a member of the Byrds and he was largely responsible for the group's shift towards country music with their album Sweetheart of the Rodeo.
Parsons and Hillman enlisted pedal steel guitarist "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow and bassist Chris Ethridge to complete the band's lineup and recorded their debut album with a series of session drummers.

Robert Parsons (sometimes spelled Persons) (Nether Stowey, Somerset, June 24, 1546 – April 15, 1610, Rome) was an English Jesuit priest of equal contemporary fame with Edmund Campion, whom he accompanied on his mission to aid the English Catholics in 1580.
Parsons was the superior on the mission and was intended to counterbalance Campion's fervour and impetuous zeal.
Parsons and Campion learned of this in Reims while en route to England.

At the end of July, Robert Parsons was a rather quiet but hard working and reliable 18 year old member of the delivery team at the Geoff Hill Electrical Superstore in Amblecote.
He was in intensive care for nearly two months with further complications from the MSRA hospital but also had an infection in his tracheotomy - during all this time his family virtually lived at the hospital.
Can I just say that through all these terribly tragic days both Robert and his family have shown nothing but resolute determination to return to as normal a life as is humanly possible and now Robert is home again that is just what they are all doing.
