This delay was due in part to McCormick's desire to perfect his machine further and to the fact that, in 1835, Robert McCormick gave his son a 400-acre farm, confronting Cyrus with the necessity of working to make that farm profitable.
McCormick held his own in the competition as the rivalries successfully moved from the mower to the self rake reaper to the harvester and finally to the harvester-binder.
Cyrus McCormick was born on February 15, 1809 on a farm in the Valley of Virginia, 18 miles away from the little town of Lexington.

 Robert R. McCormick
McCormick gained his title of Colonel from the May 1918 battle of Cantigny, during WWI, in which --- rumors to the contrary --- he proved himself to be a resourceful and brave commander.
With all his love of military, uniforms, pageantry and the like, McCormick worked to create the singular isolationism of the middle west which helped to sink the League of Nations; later, he fought bitterly to keep us out of WWII: he disliked the politics of Roosevelt, even though he had been a classmate at Groton.
We picked this one up prepared to dislike McCormick but when we put it down we ended up being a bit fond of the old bastard.

The McCormick who emerges from Smith's book is also a brilliant businessman, a passionate lover of Chicago, an important figure in international politics (despite his isolationist views), and a protector of the First Amendment who deserves a place in any history of freedom of expression in this country.
That is the simplest characterization of McCormick (1880-1955) and the one that most people familiar with the infamous publisher may have.

Amazon.ca: Books: The Colonel: The Life and Legend of Robert R. McCormick, 1880-1955
Thoroughly using his unlimited access to all of Robert McCormick's personal and corporate papers, Smith portrays a man of eccentric genius and stunning contradictions, who was at once an ardent patriot and a "prototype reactionary," a visionary and an anachronism, a soldier who revered martial virtue while despising martial force.
Robert R. McCormick, longtime owner and editor of the Chicago Tribune during the first half of this century, makes today's media barons seem bland.
If there is a flaw in the book, it is in Smith's failure to adequately explain how the view of McCormick as a hidebound reactionary came to overshadow many aspects of his life, such as his early career as a progressive in local politics, or his legal campaigns in support of the First Amendment.
