Robert Raikes ("the Younger") (14 September 1736 – 5 April 1811) was an English philanthropist and Anglican layman, noted for his promotion of Sunday schools.
Raikes was born at Gloucester in 1736, the eldest child of Mary Drew and Robert Raikes, a newspaper publisher.
Raikes had been involved with those incarcerated at the county Poor Law (part of the jail at that time) and saw that vice would be better prevented than cured.

Raikes was inspired to create the carved urns after he was approached at an art show by a funeral consultant.
Raikes said he can make an urn for one's cremains, with smaller versions of the urn to hold just a bit of the ashes - an essence of the person, Raikes said - to be given to relatives.

Born to Robert and Mary Raikes in 1736, Robert Raikes was baptised at St. Mary de Crypt (still there in Southgate St.) and educated at the Crypt School (the authors old School) and later on at Kings School which can still be found by the Cathedral.
Robert Raikes then realised that the prisons were full of people whose lives had been shaped by their deprived childhood.Soon after this, he and the reverend Thomas Stock opened the worlds first Sunday School in St. Catherine's St. Unfortunately, despite local opposition, the council have demolished this building.
Robert Raikes retire in 1802 and died in 1811 of a heart attack.
