Rossen's occupational-insurance carrier paid his medical bills after his injury and made disability payments to Rossen amounting to approximately $600 each month for 13 months after his injury; however, those payments have ceased because that insurance coverage did not provide for the continuation of disability payments beyond Rossen's reaching 65 years of age.

 Robert Rossen
Rossen wrote, directed and produced his own films; in the end, he lived a life very much like the stories he told onscreen.
Rossen had been an active member of the Communist Party in New York and Los Angeles and HUAC had uncovered his affiliations.
Perhaps Rossen's characters, who always seemed to be on the verge of greatness, reflected their creator's own dilemma.

Robert Rossen: I don't think after two years of thinking, that any one individual can ever indulge himself in the luxury of individual morality or pit it against what I feel today very strongly is the security and safety of this nation.

Robert Rossen died as he was beginning to regain a prominent position in the cinema.
Rossen, firmly entrenched in the theatrical values of content through script and performance, had previously worked with strong cinematographers (especially James Wong Howe and Burnett Guffey), but had worked from the conviction that content was the prime area of concern.
Rossen's last project, which went unrealized because of his death, would have allowed him to portray both the social and psychological problems of people living in the vicinity of Cape Canaveral (Cape Kennedy).

 Robert Rossen
American screenwriter, director, and producer Robert Rossen, born Robert Rosen, was raised by Russian-Jewish immigrants in the often violent ghettos of the Lower East Side in New York.
Rossen was never a great playwright, though his socialist-oriented plays enjoyed some success.
In 1953, Rossen chose to "rat" on many of his peers to the Committee and so was able to resume his career.

 REELINSIDER.COM - ALL THE KING'S MEN (1949)
Capitalizing on Robert Penn Warren's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, All the King's Men, he was able to comply with HUAC's demands well enough to put his eventual fllisting from the industry on hold and stage his most celebrated film.
When given Rossen's real-life troubles and political difficulties, All the King's Men is partially concerned with the way laws are made, truths told and power formed by those in a position to name what's good and bad in society.
But Rossen's film is also a reasonable choice when considering its somewhat prescient ideas about the pairing of political corruption, showmanship and murder.

Rossen's severe, sincere, stark fl-and-white drama is sometimes lost in a muddle of undefined character motivations, but it's quite a ride toward the film's last-minute epiphany.
LILITH was made by the American director Robert Rossen after a period of having been fllisted, or graylisted at any rate, and a tremendous comeback with THE HUSTLER starring Jackie Gleason.
Rossen captures Lilith's spirit even in the opening credits, as an abstract drawing reveals what appears to be a spider breaking away from its web.

Rossen simply shows little sensibility for the epic, staging lavish but brief and rather pedestrian battles, and somehow drawing from the usually mesmerizing Burton a performance lacking the charisma essential to a great military commander.
That lack of imagination is present throughout; it's as if director Robert Rossen all of a sudden found himself behind the camera with neither a real vision nor a real passion for the project.
Rossen is hampered by a script that thinks it is delving deeper into its characters than it actually is, resulting in some leaden speeches that end up quite platitudinous.

Emanuel Levy : Review - All the King's Men
A somber but realistic chronicle of raw, brutal power in force, "All the King's Men" was brought to the screen by producer Robert Rossen who also wrote the screenplay and directed the film.
A compelling story of a self-made, self-styled politician, it was politics that almost prevented Rossen from making "All the King's Men" in the first place, when he was named by the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1947 for having Communist sympathies.
Rossen's denial of this to Columbia chief Harry Cohn enables him to continue work on the film.

His writing was influenced by his Communist affiliations and, although he had left the party in 1945, his involvement led to a subpoena from the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947.
In the four years that elapsed before Rossen was eventually tried and fllisted, he established himself as an independent producer and director of note with films such as "Body and Soul" (1947), scripted by Abraham Polonsky, and "All the King's Men" (1949), an incisive indictment of political corruption.
After "naming names" in 1953 Rossen was allowed to continue working, but chose not to return to Hollywood.

(On this viewing, I was struck by the way Rossen and his cinematographer literally illuminate Dru's face from the very moment her character meets Willie.

As a boxing movie it is probably responsible for coining a host of clichés but the fight of the little man against big business is convincingly told and Garfield is credible in the lead.

The Hustler was Robert Rossen's cimematic masterpiece, and, for all the stylistics and photography employed, it is the contest of talent over self-assurance that makes the lasting immpression.
Newman sneers, barks and grins his way through a consistantly impressive script with deadbeat conviction, all the while oblivious to Robert Rossens stark landscapes, and cynical world.
Newman is at times breathtaking as 'Fast' Eddy Felson, a young and talented pool hustler in search of the holy grail, the legendary Minnesota Fats.
