Born in Kansas City in 1894, Bennett was a home-schooled musician who would routinely substitute for whatever instrument might be absent from his bandmaster-father’s rehearsals.
Bennett left for New York in 1916 to further his career; at first a copyist at Schirmer’s, he soon moved to an arranging position at Harms.
Bennett did his first theater orchestrations in 1920 and quickly rose to pre-eminence in his field, sometimes working on more than twenty shows a season.

Tall and lanky and slightly handicapped by childhood polio, he had made a living copying music when Max Dreyfus, the genius at T. Harms, Kern's publisher, appointed Bennett to work with Kern from '23.
After Kern died in 1945 Bennett worked with Rodgers and Hammerstein; the unforgettable sound of the original cast recording of RandH's South Pacific, one of the biggest hit albums of all time, is that of Bennett's skill, and he won an Oscar '55 for his work on the film of Oklahoma!

Robert Russell Bennett led a double life both as a composer in his own right and as Broadway's most successful orchestrator.
Bennett's "Lincoln" Symphony is a sober, sincere, very attractively written work notable for its lack of pretension.
A character study worthy to rank with Elgar's Falstaff or Strauss' Don Juan, Bennett's symphony manages to cover a wide range of mood without resorting to a Broadway orchestrator's usual bag of tricks: excessive harp glissandos, rippling celesta passages, heroic horn tunes capped by cymbals and glockenspiel--that sort of thing.

Bennett wrote Sights and Sounds about the same time as the symphony and submitted both works to a competition bankrolled by RCA Victor.
The success of this suite and of other Bennett works I've enjoyed suggests to me that Bennett is primarily a miniaturist, a lyric (as opposed to epic or tragic) poet of a very high order.

Each episode ran for 30 minutes and focused primarily on the U.S. Navy's participation in the then-still recent Second World War, from the fight against German U-boats in the North Atlantic to the fierce struggle for domination of the Pacific between American and Japanese fleets.
Renowned conductor and arranger Robert Russell Bennett's name has forever been linked with Rodgers' Victory at Sea score, for it was Bennett who conducted the NBC Symphony Orchestra during the original soundtrack's recording, and early LP and cassette editions of the score were credited to this now defunct ensemble.
Later recordings, including this 1992 BMG re-issue, were later performed by the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra, but still under the energetic and expert baton of conductor Bennett.
