McMillan is in charge of the Spacewatch survey of the solar system for near-Earth asteroids, main-belt asteroids, Centaurs, comets, and Trans-Neptunian objects.
McMillan's career has included studies of variable stars, statistics of stellar populations, interstellar dust, interstellar magnetic fields, planetary atmospheres, Doppler shift spectroscopy of stars, astronomical instrumentation, and surveys of asteroids.
McMillan became the Principal Investigator of Spacewatch in mid-1997.

McMillan pleaded no contest to felony DUI, his fourth DUI conviction, leaving the scene of an accident involving injury and driving with a suspended license for causing a Dec. 19 crash that slightly injured a woman.
McMillan, who is married and has children, was sentenced to 30 days in the Pinellas County Jail after violating his probation in 1997, court records show.
McMillan's law license is suspended, and he faces the possibility of permanent disbarment with the felony convictions.

Spacewatch astronomers led by Tom Gehrels and Robert McMillan have used a 36-inch (0.9-meter) UA telescope on Kitt Peak to electronically scan the skies for asteroids throughout the solar system since 1984.
But Gehrels' and McMillan's original hope in 1980 was to use a 72-inch (1.8-meter) telescope in their electronic asteroid survey.
Faint targets for the new telescope include the small Near-Earth Asteroids, some of the bigger and brighter Trans-Neptunian Objects in the Kuiper Belt, and Near-Earth Asteroids that have previously flown by Earth as these objects usually appear fainter on successive swings by the planet, he added.

R. Jedicke and J. Herron (LPL/UA) used Spacewatch data to derive the distribution of asteroids in the main belt as a function of absolute magnitude and orbital semimajor axis.
The Apollo asteroid 1998KY26 discovered by Spacewatch in 1998 came close enough for S. Ostro of JPL to observe it with radar and was found to be very small (~30 m) and the fastest-rotating asteroid known.
