Robert S. Mulliken - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Robert Sanderson Mulliken (June 7, 1896 - October 31, 1986) was an American physicist and chemist, primarily responsible for the elaboration of the molecular orbital method of computing the structure of molecules.
Mulliken's molecular-orbital method, building on the quantitative work of John Lennard-Jones, proved to be more flexible and applicable to a vast variety of types of molecules and molecular fragments, and has totally eclipsed Pauling's valence-bond method.
Mulliken helped with some of the editorial work when his father wrote his four-volume text on organic compound identification, and thus became an expert on organic chemical nomenclature.

Mulliken was in her day known as a beauty, at the university campus as a young woman.
Mulliken and I produced a couple of papers together, one on butadiene and one on resonance energy.
Mulliken wanted him to move out, but he didn't want to do that and it had some affect, perhaps.

 My Descent from Robert Mulliken
Robert, along with others of the same surname, was a member of the Scot's Charitable Society and of the St. Andrews Lodge of Free Masons to which Paul Revere belonged.
T he earliest families of the name Mulliken known to have settled in the Colonies came to Maryland with Lord Baltimore as early as 1650 where they prospered having large holdings of land grants which increased rapidly in value as the country was settled.
I t is possible that Mehitable (Dodge) Mulliken was of the family and one of the descendants of William Dodge who came from England on the ship Lion's Whelp which sailed from Gravesend 25 April 1629 and from the Isle of Wight 11 May 1629 and landed at Salem, MA 29 June 1629.

 Mulliken, Robert Sanderson
The son of an organic chemist, Mulliken was educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Chicago, where he was awarded his PhD in 1921.
Mulliken's work in chemistry was concerned with the development of molecular orbital theory.
Apart from a brief period in New York, Mulliken spent the whole of his academic career at Chicago, serving from 1931 until his retirement in 1961 as professor of physics.

 Historical Sketch, 1893-1986
Robert Mulliken, Clemens Roothaan, and Ugo Fano made Chicago one of the world centers of molecular and atomic theory.
When theoretical physics emerged as an important discipline in its own right, the Department was ready with Robert Mulliken, who received the Nobel Prize for his work on molecular structure, and later Gregor Wentzel, Edward Teller, Maria Goeppert-Mayer, Clarence Zener, and S.Chandrasekhar to take an active role in it.
Robert R. Wilson built the Fermi National Accelerator, one of the most powerful instruments for probing the structure of elementary particles.
