 Robert Sessions Woodworth (Career)
Woodworth was followed as APA president, however, by the founder of behaviorism John B. Watson who wished to eliminate both reference to consciousness and use of introspective methods from psychology --precisely because the old Wundtian definition of psychological subject matter as 'experience' had led to such acrimonious and unproductive controversies.
The unit of analysis named by Woodworth is biological and implies that the psycholgist's task is to 'measure the interaction between the organism and its environment' --rather than to 'investigate the phylogenetic, ontogenetic, and socio-historical transformations' (i.e., continuity and discontinuity) of psychological processes (see also Ballantyne, December, 2003).
Woodworth's 1910 warning was merely one that psychologists should not be jumping to hasty hereditary conclusions upon inadequate data or inadequate analysis of data.

 Old Oaken Bucket, The
Woodworth originally published this poem under the title "The Bucket." It soon acquired several (rather feeble) tunes and the title "The Old Oaken Bucket." Around 1850, it was fitted to the tune "Araby's Daughter" by George Kiallmark; that somehow rescued it from the dustbin of nostalgia and made it into a highly popular song.
Notes: Samuel Woodworth's only other noteworthy composition was "The Hunters of Kentucky." His novels and plays are mercifully forgotten.

And yet at a human level, the project was a disaster-not only had 28 men died and 2 ships been lost, but a series of sensational courts-martial had also ensued that pitted the expedition's controversial leader, Lieutenant Charles Wilkes, against almost every officer under his command.
The story pivots on Charles Wilkes--simultaneously ambitious, proud, petty, and courageous, a self-destructive dynamo who undermines his own prodigious feats by alienating his crew and officers, fighting battles with his sponsors, and jealously guarding what should have been a proud national legacy.

The chapters on Robert Smalls and Willis Augustus Hodges illustrate the roles played by African Americans during this period.

Readers will meet women like LaSalle Pickett, whose activities reveal a good deal about marriage, gender and the postwar southern propaganda effort on behalf of the "Lost Cause." The abolition movement is covered in the sketch of Charles Grandison Finney.
