Outpost Gallifrey: Reviews   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Robert Shearman's first two full-length Doctor Who plays were typified by a unique blend of fl comedy and outright horror, and while his last audio, The Maltese Penguin, was an outright comedy played for laughs, his latest, the appropriately titled Jubilee sees him return to more familiar dramatic ground.
Shearman leads the listener to concluding that the prisoner in the bloody tower in one individual, but it is done too obviously and as such the astute listener will realise the true identity of the prisoner in spite of this misleading information, lessening the dramatic impact and the effect of the implications of this scene.
Shearman's use of the Doctor and Evelyn combination is exceptional, and the sparkling dialogue that has so often typified their relationship is back despite the fact they spend a considerable amount of the audio separated from each other.

 [No title]
Shearman manages the remarkable feat of making you feel shocked and outraged on behalf of an imprisoned, brutalised Dalek, before going on to explore the psychology of the creature like no-one's ever done before.
To muddy the waters further, Shearman throws in a whole bunch of irrelevant plotlines and twee, wordy humour that yanks the concept down from a clean, clever examination of the "Dalek Factor", for want of a better phrase, into a clunky parallel universe story that is far, far too unwieldy.
Shearman himself achieved this in The Holy Terror, a fun comedy/horror/tragedy romp, with lurking themes of social etiquette that only came to me a long time afterwards.

 DOCTOR WHO
Robert Shearman has been Big Finish's most consistent writer, which is no mean achievement when you consider the level of that consistency.
Robert Shearman's author's notes highlight the fact that the Daleks have become safe, funny and camp.
This is primarily achieved via the sole survivor of the 1903 invasion, kept alone and de-armed in a cell, and Shearman manages to make the listener feel outraged by the Dalek's treatment.

Whereas in the earlier play, it was the British TV sitcom that received the treatment, here it is 1940s American film noir that is brilliantly recreated, and in particular as the title suggests, the 1941 Humphrey Bogart film, " The Maltese Falcon ".
It is very much Frobisher's story, and as such, it is Robert Jezek who is the star of the play.
Robert is simply the single greatest writing talent working in Doctor Who today, long may he continue to turn out work of this quality.

Shearman briefly considered making Adam the son of van Statten, although this relationship was eventually discarded.
Unfortunately, Davies' and Shearman's plans were crippled with the announcement on July 2nd, 2004 that negotiations between the BBC and the estate of Dalek creator Terry Nation for the use of the monsters had drawn to an unsuccessful conclusion.
(Shearman would later ironically dub this draft “Absence Of The Daleks”.) Fortunately, the situation was resolved a month later: on August 4th, it was revealed that a last-minute deal had been reached between the two parties.

"The Maltese Penguin" is, in fact closer to Robert's excellent BBV release "Punchline" - a near perfect pastiche of a very familiar dramatic form.
Whereas in the earlier play, it was the British TV sitcom that received the treatment, here it is 1940s American film noir that is brilliantly recreated, and in particular as the title suggests, the 1941 Humphrey Bogart film, "The Maltese Falcon".

Aged just 16, Robert Shearman made his VFL debut with Essendon in 1956, and immediately impressed with his ability to take a strong mark, his calmness under pressure, and most of all perhaps his prodigious drop kicking.
In 1961, Shearman followed his former Essendon coach Dick Reynolds to West Torrens where he continued to improve as a player.
After finishing runner-up to Port Adelaide in 1965, the Blues, with Shearman a conspicuous contributor in the pivot, crushed the Magpies by 56 points in the 1966 grand final to secure their first flag for 26 years.

The writer of the piece, Robert Shearman is an award winning playwright turning his keyboard to his love affair with a timelord (not counting his wife, who according to the inlay notes let him work on the play while they were on their honeymoon).
Another work Deadline featured Derek Jacobi as a ex-writer for Juliet Bravo with delusions of traveling the universe in a police box with his granddaughter and her school teachers based on a treatment for a tv show he never managed to get off the ground.
Scherzo fits perfectly into this ouvre as Shearman again reduces the concept of the show to it's bare bones, stretches and manipulates them but still produces something which is both recognizable and alien at the same time.
