  Robert Simpson (composer)
Robert (Wilfred Levick) Simpson (March 2, 1921 - December 21, 1997) was an English musicologist and composer best known for his symphonies and string quartets.
Robert Simpson is said to have written and destroyed four Symphonies (one of which even used serial procedures) before his first published Symphony.
Simpson was still interested in the idea of writing for just one listener, so he talked with Dorrell to get an idea of what kind of Symphony he'd like to hear.

 Robert Simpson (composer)
Robert (Wilfred Levick) Simpson (March 2, 1921 andndash; November 21, 1997) was an English composer and long-serving BBC producer and broadcaster.
Simpson's Symphony No.5 (1972), in five movements played without a break, is dominated by an enigmatic 6-note chord which, according to the composer, is meant to represent "the part of the mind that is always watching you, no matter what sort of experiences you're having".
This work, composed 1985-87 and held by some to be the summit of Simpson's symphonic achievement, is in a single monumental movement and in one basic pulse, though it encompasses an opening section in chorale-prelude style, a big Beethovenian scherzo, and a concluding set of variations on a palindromic theme.

 Classical Net Review - Robert Simpson - Symphonies #3 & 5
But, as Simpson is fond of saying: "It doesn't matter if you can't tell B Flat from a rissole" – you have to hear the tumultuous momentum he generates from this outwardly simple plan.
With the second movement the underlying inspiration was the music of nature itself: I recall hearing Simpson explain in a radio broadcast how he threw open the bedroom window of his house, deep in the English countryside, as dawn was breaking and was fascinated by the growing energy expressed in the dawn chorus.
Indeed, although the trappings of Simpson's music simply easily enough assimilated, this is a work that asks a tremendous amount of its listeners – I left the hall after Davis' 1982 performance, my first encounter with the piece, with shoulders so stiff with the tension of it all that they hurt for days.

Their life together was at once stimulating and frustrating-they were both intensely artistic and devoted to the further development of their skills in that realm.
As Robert Simpson, one of Nielsen's most ardent and influential champions, has put it: "Nielsen is one of those rare individuals who know the shortest rout to the truth."

The English composer Robert Simpson speculates that the late arrival of the Northern Lights was because "culture began in the sun" and that only nineteenth-century advances in technology brought the harsh life in Scandinavia to a level of cultural leisure wherein music could be pursued.
Whatever the truth of this may be, Scandinavian music is drenched in an elemental feel for the forces of nature, in both their destructive and uplifting guises.

In this important and provocative book Robert Simpson, for nearly thirty years a BBC Music Producer scrutinised the methods by which the Proms were planned.
Nevertheless, Simpson's thesis is still relevant, despite the enormous changes that have taken place within that (still) angst-ridden bureaucratic organisation.
He felt the only logical way to give the Proms the flair that a single imagination can provide without the otherwise inevitable long-term imbalances affecting both composers and performers would be to appoint a separate planner of the Proms with a limited tenure of four or five years.

While that may sound condescending, it is intended as a tribute to a masterly composer who is bold enough and confident enough in his materials to write transparently.

Of course, Carl Nielsen’s influence permeates Simpson’s work, so it is especially fascinating to hear what he does with one of Nielsen’s themes in a set of variations that display everything from humor (not a frequent element in Simpson’s work), drama, and his characteristic skill at contrapuntal writing and the projection of orchestral power.
