Robert Spall - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Robert Spall was a Canadian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
On 12/13 August 1918 near Parvillers, France, during an enemy counter-attack, Sergeant Spall's platoon became isolated, whereupon he took a Lewis gun and standing on the parapet, fired upon the advancing enemy, inflicting many casualties.
He then came down from the trench and directed his men into a sap 75 yards away, after which he picked up another Lewis gun, again climbed the parapet and held up the enemy with his fire, but while doing so was killed.

Insofar as UK films do well across the pond, they seem to be either costume dramas or comedies; Mike Leigh, on the other hand, specialises in the kind of closely-observed working-class kitchen-sink pieces which generally don't do well even when it's a big-name American helming.
And while Brenda Blethyn had a wonderful opportunity, in Secrets and Lies, to indulge in wide-barrelled melodrama, Timothy Spall, in All or Nothing, is quite the opposite: shut up, worn down, a man who essentially has the same expression on his face for 90% of the film.
The first comes at the emotional climax of the film, when Spall finally breaks down and Manville attempts to comfort him.

Preoccupied with social climbing, Sir Robert and his snooty sister Lady Heidelberg (Joan Collins) are busy planning the wedding of Fanny's older sister Betsy (Emma Chambers) to Sir John Ogleby (Tom Hollander), the doltish son of prominent Lord Ogleby (Nigel Hawthorne).
Despite lovely costumes and other period details, it lacks the directorial buoyancy necessary to set its theatrical wheels spinning.
With the romantic leads underplaying and Collins and Spall overplaying, the farce sputters and the requisite effervescence dissipates; only Hawthorne finds the right tone of exaggerated realism.
