Robert Stewart, an illegitimate son of the future King Robert II of Scotland and of Elizabeth Mure of Rowallan, became legitimated in 1349 upon his parents' marriage.
Robert subsequently married Muriella de Keith, with whom he had two sons, the elder of whom was John Stewart, 2nd Earl of Buchan.
The Duke of Albany died in Stirling Castle and lies buried in Dunfermline Abbey in Fife.

He was the first sovereign of the house of Stuart, or Stewart (see Stuart, family), which eventually succeeded to the English as well as the Scottish throne.
The son of Walter the Steward and Marjory, daughter of Robert I, he was regent three times (1333–35, 1338–41, and 1346–58) for David II during the latter’s exile and captivity.
Robert’s first marriage took place after the birth of several of his sons, but their succession to the throne was legitimized by an act of Parliament in 1373.

His father, Robert Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany was a prominent Scottish nobleman who was regent in various capacities during the reigns of three kings (Robert II, Robert III, and James I).
In 1425 the king carried out a purge of the Albany Stewarts, and he was executed along with several members of his family and close associates; all of his peerage titles became attainted and were forfeited.
