  USAA CEO Robert G. Davis Named Chairman-Elect; Chairman General Robert T. Herres to Step Down Oct. 2002
Herres announced the decision to USAA employees at the association's monthly management meeting, held yesterday at its San Antonio headquarters and broadcast by satellite to its offices throughout the country.
Herres said Davis' appointment was the culmination of years of succession planning begun shortly after Herres took office as chairman and CEO in 1993.
General Herres' first assignment at USAA was as president of USAA's property and casualty insurance company.

After a 36-year distinguished military career, General Herres is the chairman and chief executive officer of USAA, a member-owned diversified insurance and financial services association, originally serving current and former members of the U.S. military and their families.
General Herres joined the company as president of the property and casualty insurance division in 1990, and in January 1992 he was named chief operating officer for insurance and information services.
General Herres will be honored during the 2000 Convention when President Douglas M. Green will present him with a commemorative plaque and a $500 scholarship to be given in his name to the university of his choice.

Herres eventually became a four star general and ended his career as Vice-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under Colin Powell.
General Robert T. Herres is vice chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Washington, D.C. General Herres was born in 1932, in Denver, where he attended East High School.
In August 1967 General Herres was assigned to the Manned Orbiting Laboratory program at the Space Systems Division of Air Force Systems Command in Los Angeles as a crewmember and chief of the Flight Crew Division.

SAN ANTONIO -- USAA has announced its board of directors has appointed Robert G. "Bob" Davis to the position of chairman-elect of the association.
Davis will continue as chief executive officer and will succeed General Robert T. Herres, chairman of the board, who will step down at USAA's Annual Members Meeting on Oct. 5, 2002.

Some members of Congress seized the opportunity to draw out of General Herres reservations about ''Star Wars'' that are rarely expressed openly by the military.
The general did not argue against the Administration's positions on ''Star Wars'' - a highly unlikely course for an officer in his position -but his message was an unmistakable ''go slow.'' And those who heard him were well aware of the influence he was bringing to bear.

 USAA Appoints Robert G. Davis as Chief Operating Officer
SAN ANTONIO--Feb. 9, 1999--Robert T. Herres, chairman and CEO of USAA, announced at a special management meeting today that Robert G. Davis has been elected to the association's board of directors and, effective June 1, will become its chief operating officer.
Davis, 52, most recently has served as USAA's deputy chief executive officer for capital management and as president and chief executive officer, USAA Capital Corporation (CAPCO).
"Bob Davis has clearly demonstrated his commitment to the vision, strategic purpose, mission and values upon which the future of USAA depends," Herres said, noting that the appointment was unanimously decided upon by the USAA board of directors in meetings over the past weekend as an ongoing phase of the association's executive succession planning process.

Upon graduation from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1960 he transferred to Europe, where he served as a technical intelligence analyst and, later, as a flying training supervisor.
He was assigned to Peterson Air Force Base, Colo., as commander in chief of the North American Aerospace Defense Command and Aerospace Defense Command, and commander of U.S. Air Force Space Command in July 1984.

 USAA Acquires $450 Million in Cat Reinsurance
USAA has acquired $450 million in catastrophe reinsurance from Residential Reinsurance Limited, a Cayman Island reinsurer, according to Robert T. Herres, USAA chairman and CEO.
The transaction is similar to one in 1997 in which USAA acquired catastrophe reinsurance to cover a portion of the risk of hurricane losses for policyholders in 20 states and the District of Columbia.
The ResRe contract enhances other sources of reinsurance USAA currently has in place for exposure to hurricane losses.
