Robert Thaler is the visiting assistant clinical professor and attorney-in-charge of the Hofstra University School of Law's Mediation Clinic.
Thaler chaired the NYC Family Court Juvenile Justice Committee's Juvenile Delinquency Mediation Working Group, and was a member of the NYC Family Court ADR-DV Subcommittee, which works to bridge the gaps between the mediation community and the domestic violence advocacy community.
Thaler maintained a private law practice in Manhattan representing clients in criminal and civil matters, and was an assistant district attorney for Kings County and the special narcotics prosecutor for the City of New York from 1989 to 1993.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Thaler, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Robb and Melissa Thaler, a daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and Dan, and two grandchildren, Magen and Joshua, all of Jacksonville, Fla.; an uncle, Victor W. Gordon of Monticello; and numerous cousins.

Thaler and a colleague from Indiana University, Steven Sherman, created a conference for economists and psychologists to study decision-making in professional sports events.
If a basketball team is behind by 2 points at the end of a game, the odds, said Thaler and other scholars, are better for winning if a player takes a three-point shot as opposed to shooting a two-pointer at the buzzer and hoping to win in overtime.
