Vaughn was born in New York City to Roman Catholic showbiz parents, Walter, a radio actor, and Marcella, a stage actress.
Vaughn's first notable appearance was in The Young Philadelphians (1959) for which he was nominated for a Supporting Actor Academy Award.

Robert Vaughn is a gray-haired, silky-voiced actor, most famous as the stylish spy Napoleon Solo in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. After a year at the University of Minneapolis, he packed his bags for Hollywood.
Vaughn had several TV series in addition to The Man from U.N.C.L.E. In the mid-1960s he co-starred with Gary Lockwood in The Lieutenant, and in the early 1970s he played Harry Rule in The Protectors.
Vaughn was later one of the first Hollywood name actors to take a stand against the Vietnam war, and actively campaigned for Democrats John and Robert F. Kennedy, Eugene McCarthy, George McGovern, and Pierre Salinger.
