Robert Williams Wood (May 2, 1868 - August 11, 1955) was an American physicist.
Born Concord, Massachusetts, Wood was professor of experimental physics at Johns Hopkins University from 1901.
The Wood crater on the far side of the Moon was named after him.

Wood conducted a series of experiments on liquid mirror reflecting optics for a telescope, and published three papers in 1909 on his attempts to build a functioning astronomical research instrument using mercury for a mirror.
Wood described his flash telescope as 3 inches in aperture, 18 inches focal length, with the 8 volt lamp filament at the focal point; resulting in a projected beam that was 10 feet wide at 2 miles distance, visible using binoculars at a distance of 12 miles in the full sunlight (Physical Optics pp49-50).
A refueling stop on the moon was illustrated by Wood using a series of photographs of models he made of lunar craters (with cutout photos of ocean divers in pressure suits), the distant earth painted on a ball, the ray gun exploding the asteroid, with backdrops of a fl sky with stars.

ROBERT W. Robert W. Wood, born in Augusta, Maine, was a graduate of Waterville College (now Colby College) in 1829 and received his medical degree from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, in 1832.
Although from 1849 until the time he left the Islands he abandoned the active practice of medicine to become a sugar planter on Kauai, he was one of the signers of the charter of incorporation of the Hawaiian Medical Society in 1856 and served as president from 1856 through 1858.
In 1880 Dr. Wood donated $1,000 to Oahu College, $500 to the Queen's Hospital, and $500 to the pastor of the Bethel Church.
