Weir's verses of O Canada were published in an official form for the Diamond Jubilee of Confederation in 1927, and gradually became the most generally accepted anthem in English-speaking Canada, completely winning out over the alternatives by the 1960s.

Weir first executed a horizontal formatted Saint Nicholas (1837, private collection) during a decade when the theme of the saint was enjoying particular attention and there was a conscious formalization of a Knickerbocker self-concept.
Weir would replicate this second image of the saint at least four times, but of the entire group of Nicholas paintings, only the Butler lnstitute's is signed and dated.
Weir's Nicholas paintings invoke seventeenth-century Dutch genre pictures in the use of a wooden panel as a support, the meticulous handling, and the warm palette.

Weir, whose work had become increasingly daring after his initial stay in Europe, absorbed many aspects of Impressionism from his American colleagues and eventually exhibited with that group of them known as The Ten.

However, assuming that the John Weir of Washington Co., TN is the son of Hugh Weir, and the muster role of Captain John Hasslet's Co. in Cumberland Co., PA also represents the son of Hugh Weir, it would in fact put his birth year about--quite a coincidence, huh.
