ROBERT HUNT (1807-1887), English natural philosopher, was born at Devonport on the 6th of September 1807.
He began to study in London for the medical profession, but ill-health caused him to return to the west of England, and in 1840 he became secretary to the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society at Falmouth.
Here he was brought into contact with Robert Were Fox, and carried on some physical and chemical investigations with him.

New to the archive catalogue this month are 125 letters to Robert Were Fox FRS (1789-1877) and his family, particularly his daughters, the diarist Caroline Fox (1819-1871) and the translator Anna Maria Fox (1815-1897).

The tiny arid land foxes unique to the North American Great Plains have gone through such a multiplicity of name changes since their first discovery by Europeans in 1823 that the Oglala Sioux name of Mee Yah Chah, meaning "the lousy one", must be the only constant one.
Within the swift fox range, three States list it as an endangered species and provide protection: North Dakota, where it is extirpated, South Dakota where there is an estimated population of 50-100 animals, and Nebraska where the unknown population is believed to declining over most of the State.
In 1978, when the swift fox was designated by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) as extirpated, their ownership was changed by the stroke of a bureaucrat's pen from the Smeeton family to the Canadian Wildlife Service.
