Robert Whitehead's son James became Ambassador to the Austrian Empire and one of James' daughters, Francis, was asked to christen an Austrian submarine.
Indeed it was a Whitehead Mark VIII torpedo that sank the Argentine cruiser, Belgrano during the Falklands conflict in 1982.

Whitehead who had an excellent reputation by now was approached by an Austrian Navy Captain, Giovanni de Luppis and ask to enter into a partnership to build an unmanned, self-propelled surface boat packed with explosives which could be directed at blockading warships.
Whitehead tried for several months to assist Luppis with his invention but between them they failed to perfect a viable weapon.

To keep the torpedo at a required depth, Whitehead developed perhaps the most crucial piece of engineering that became the basis for his success - it was a hydrostatic plate to drive the depth rudder, by a spring connected to a pendulum.
Robert Whitehead's daughter, Alice, married Count George Hoyos in 1869, who purchased the Fiume factory and renamed it Silurifico Whitehead, with John Whitehead, (the eldest son), becoming a director.
Whitehead decided to build his factory at Portland Harbour (as this was where torpedo trials were held), at Ferrybridge, near Weymouth.

Its British inventor Robert Whitehead was a brilliant Victorian engineer who, while honored by many countries world-wide, received little or no recognition from the land of his birth.
In the 1950’s a superb collection of torpedoes on display at the Torpedo Experimental Establishment at HMS Vernon was scrapped, despite the pleas of the engineers who had built up the collection[1].
Weymouth and Portland was found to be an ideal area for the Royal Navy to test torpedoes once the British Government decided to purchase the manufacturing rights for the weapon from the Whitehead Torpedo Company, Fiume, Austria, in 1871.
