ROBERT WILSON is a theatre director, artist and designer who fuses sound, image, text and movement to create extraordinarily evocative stage sets, exhibitions and installations.
Born in Waco, Texas in 1941, Robert Wilson struggled as a child to overcome a speech disability which he finally conquered in his late teens with the help of the dancer, Byrd Hoffman.
Wilson devoted much of the early 1980s to an international collaboration, the epic opera, the CIVIL warS: a tree is best measured when it is down, which was intended to be the centrepiece of the 1984 Olympic Arts Festival in Los Angeles.

Wilson took a leave of absence from the Cornell faculty in 1967 to assume directorship of the National Accelerator Laboratory, where what was to be the highest-energy particle accelerator was under construction in Batavia, Ill. Under Wilson's leadership, the four-mile-circumference, 400 GeV (400 billion electron volt) machine was completed on time and under budget.
Wilson was born March 4, 1914, in Frontier, Wyo., and he later recalled a simpler time when physicists did not know the scores of subatomic particles that his machines would reveal, saying: "We had only electrons and protons, and you could put those together into atoms in various ways and make the whole universe.
Wilson is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Jane Inez Scheyer; three sons, Daniel R. Wilson of Indianapolis, Jonathan H. Wilson of Columbus, Ind., and Rand E. Wilson of Boston; four grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Jane Greenhill of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.

For the person new to Robert Wilson, you might be most interested by his stagings of known works  LOHENGRIN at the Met, or DIE ZAUBERFLOTE, or a host of other well-known pieces.
The essays and text is helpful and dense with information, and offers many insights into what Robert Wilson has been, and still is, trying to evoke with his incredible and unique theatrical vision.
I admit, I am a huge fan of Wilson, so I have that bias, but I love to page through this thing to be inspired and to get lost in his wonderful aesthetic.
