Zmelik wasn't counting on the economic disaster that struck when the Czechs and the Slovaks divided his homeland, and the money-making opportunities he envisioned in America never came for him.
Zmelik was born in the small village of Ivana, in Moravia, a town of 1000 people, that he describes as "like Idaho." His family members were good athletes, and his older brother, Vilem, inspired the seven year-old Zmelik to compete in track and field.
As a teenager, Zmelik was sent to a sports boarding school in the town of Osterla, where he would become a part of the Czech federation men's team at age 17.
