Robert de Herle was Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports during the mid-14th century.
Herle was one of the ‘bachelors' of Warwick's household during times of peace, and was required to attend the earl at tournaments and in the event of war.
Robert Herle was associated with the Bassett family of Drayton in 1339 as retainer to the Bassett manors of Moulton, Buckby, Olney and Walsall.

Thomas de Astley was appointed with the earl as keeper of Warwick in March 1332, on a commission of oyer and terminer with the earl in 1361 and on a commission of array with the earl in 1367, and was married to the earl's sister Elizabeth.
Lord Peter de Montfort, whose heir Guy married Thomas' daughter Margaret, sat on a commission of oyer and terminer with the earl in 1344 and 1359, and served as justice of the peace with the earl in March 1351 and April 1352.
Herle was commissioned to serve the earl as one of the ‘bachelors’ of his household in peacetime, and to attend the earl in time of war and at tournaments.

It is generally supposed that a painter, Wilhelm of Cologne, mentioned in the "Limburger Chronicle" as "the best painter in German lands" is Wilhelm of Herle, and it has been customary to attribute to him some of the best work in painting of early Cologne, although there is no absolute proof in any one case.

In 1389 Agnes was holding a rent of 5 marks from the manor, granted to her for life by Robert Belknap, who had obtained a grant of the manor from Thomas Lyvet, cousin of Edmund de Knelle.
After the forfeiture of Robert Belknap she had addressed the chancellor for remedy, her rents not being paid, out of the manor of Great Knelle, Beckley, Northiam and Wittersham.
