 OutSmart - This Issue
Roberta Achtenberg became known to the wider gay community and the nation in 1993 when President Clinton nominated her for the position of assistant secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, making her the first openly gay person who was ever nominated by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
On the occasion of Roberta Achtenberg’s visit to Houston for the July 9 brunch benefiting An Uncommon Legacy, we asked another pioneering female politician if she would interview Roberta for OutSmart: Sissy Farenthold.
Roberta Achtenberg: In 1985, I think it was accepted legal principal that—except for a few private policies that pertained in private workplaces against discrimination in the workplace—there was no broad-based rule either nationally or as a matter of state law.

Roberta Achtenberg bristles when anyone dares say that Williw Brown is the one who gets things done.
Perhaps a bigger problem for Achtenberg, says Binder, is the fact that she departed midway through two political posts -- leaving for Washington after two years as a supervisor, leaving Washington after two years at HUD.
Trouble is, he adds, "if Roberta's going to affect the race, the notion of why have a policy-oriented, an ideology-oriented mayor, has to be brought out in a way that makes her the primary choice for the voters, and that hasn't happened yet.

Roberta on a rampage - social policies of Roberta Achtenberg, Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, Department of Housing and Urban Development
In 1993, after a bitter battle, Miss Achtenberg was confirmed as Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, making her the highest-ranking openly lesbian official ever.
But the real story isn't her sexuality but her world view: as the bathhouse case shows, her idea of civil rights is so abstract and far-reaching and her gay politics so myopic that she can in good conscience trample even the real interests of gays (let alone those of Boy Scouts or mortgage lenders).

Achtenberg's "cerebral style," as Agnos puts it -- he likens her to the thoughtful New Jersey Democrat Bill Bradley -- easily appeals to voters tired of flash and old-boy networks.
Achtenberg's strategy to win recognition and a competitive edge has been to issue position papers and stress her commitment to reform (the word appears eight times in her campaign door-hangers).

Achtenberg noted that while government is still controlled by the Republicans, she said the tide is turning against them and for her brand of progressive politics and community action.

There was a three-way race between Willie Brown, Frank Jordan and Roberta Achtenberg, and no candidate won an outright majority in November, necessitating a runoff election in December.
For example, an Achtenberg supporter could have marked Achtenberg as the first choice and Brown or Jordan as the second choice.
Achtenberg, with the smallest number of first place votes, would have been eliminated, just as actually happened under the existing runoff system.
