Amazon.ca: Nessun Dorma: Music: Roberto Alagna   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Alagna is, for the most part, remarkably successful, bringing interesting nuances to even the most familiar of the arias ("Nessun dorma," "Cielo e mar") and making a fine case for a beautiful, sad aria from Zandonai's Giulietta e Romeo and painting a vivid portrait of the drunken title character from Wolf-Ferrari's Sly.
Alagna darkens his tone to a rich bronze to become both the drunken poet of the title and his alter ego, the pathetic, lovestruck performing bear.
Alagna fans will certainly love this recording, but all opera buff will probably want this CD in their collection, not just for its sheer beauty, but also its array of lesser known pieces we would not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy.

La Scena Musicale - The Lebrecht Weekly
For the record, Angela Gheorghiu, 34, and Roberto Alagna, 37, are as closely entwined as they have been since they fell for each other at Covent Garden while Alagna was singing Gounod's Roméo et Juliette in October 1994.
Alagna's wife had just died of cancer and his performance possessed an almost unendurable pathos; Gheorghiu had a Romanian husband, but he got somehow mislaid.
What the Alagnas are travelling, therefore, is an unmapped road roamed by sinister forces who, in Gheorghiu's view, lie in wait to sandbag the love-struck innocents.

BERLIOZ Roberto Alagna DG 4776277 [RH]: Classical CD Reviews- July 2006 MusicWeb-International   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Granted Alagna singing in French is always a joy to listen to, but his technique owes far more to his Italian heritage than French; the open-throated-ness of his singing would seem to have little in common with such tenors as Georges Thill.
Alagna’s voice is not that of an ideal Énée, his open timbre means that he lacks the narrow focus and sense of line that is desirable in this music.
Alagna is on good form here and both excerpts are sung exquisitely, making me wish that there had been more from this neglected work.

Roberto Alagna - Profile of the French Tenor / ML Hart's Words & Music
Born in France to an immigrant Sicilian family, Roberto Alagna grew up in a musical family which he describes as opera on his mother's side, popular music on his father's.
Alagna is intelligent, curious and passionate about operatic history as well as knowledgable about his own voice, and he stretches outside of the narrowly defined box many in the opera world want to place him in.
ROBERTO ALAGNA ON One of Roberto Alagna's passions is finding new ways to film opera, to bring the excitement to a new generation of audiences.

 Roberto Alagna French arias
Although Roberto Alagna is of Sicilian background, he was born and raised in France (the liner notes refer to him as "Parisian").
Alagna's French diction is certainly far more idiomatic than what we are generally used to hearing today, it does not have the remarkably pointed clarity of such artists as ClÈment, Cazette, Thill, and Vanzo.
The repertoire is certainly adventurous, and the performances affirm Roberto Alagna's importance as a contemporary advocate of French opera.

Roberto Alagna in Paris - Opera arias & Neapolitan songs
This is not to say that Alagna’s affecting voice in Puccini’s Non piagere, Liu or in the O Souverain, o Juge, o Pere from Massenet’s Le Cid are not powerful, but the top and chest-resonance are somewhat dissipated, lost in the telephone booth, as it were.
Alagna is not Del Monaco nor Domingo, however, so the spinto power is sweet and delicate, more in the manner of Carreras.
Alagna’s vocal control in Halevy’s Rachel, quand du Seigneur is resilient and capable of swooping octaves without strain.

Alagna fans will hardly need the stimulus of a review to rush out and buy the tenor's first foray into the Christmas music market.
Once or twice one has the feeling that Alagna is not quite sure when to start singing at the beginning of the songs, and in order to achieve a semblance of unity there is rather too much artificial digital ambience used by the engineers to hide the seams.
Alagna will doubtless create many new, albeit unsuspecting, fans with his Christmas Album and one only hopes they go on to explore a little of his Gounod, Massenet, Puccini or Verdi rather than choose to wait for yet another popular excursion.

Alagna's singing, of course, continues to be appealing.
Whether praise goes to the conductor, the producer (David Groves), or to Alagna himself for finding and including these rarities, the praise is deserved; these are vital, exciting arias, not just dull curiosities that lose the listener's attention as quickly as they attract it.
Alagna remains a lyric tenor, but he has the power to sing with heft and heroism, when the music requires him to.
