Roberto Arlt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Roberto Arlt (Buenos Aires, 1900 – July 26, 1942) was an Argentine short-story writer, novelist, and playwright.
Arlt was born in poverty, and, after being expelled from school at the age of eight, learned what he could about literature and life on the streets.
Arlt's talents for polemical journalism quickly revealed themselves, and he was soon writing a controversial daily column for a national newspaper.

The year 2000 marked the centennial of Roberto Arlt’s birth, yet this giant of Argentine letters is only beginning to be known in the U.S., where he has until now been overshadowed by Jorge Luis Borges.
Arlt and Borges are seen by some critics as having contributed equally to the development of modern Argentine prose, but from opposite ends of the social spectrum.
Arlt’s use of an episodic structure is ideal for conveying the fragmented nature of these experiences.

 The Seven Madmen (Extraordinary Classics)
Arlt would have turned 100 this year, but his novels are still with us.
Written by the eccentric Argentinian Roberto Arlt, it explores the tortured inner life of bill-collector Remo Erdosain and follows him as he becomes involved with a bizarre terrorist plot to overthrow the government.
Arlt was a true rebel who was way ahead of his time, and The Seven Madmen belongs near the top of any list of great 20th century novels.

The Astrologer, with his enthusiasm for both the KKK and Bolshevism, is perhaps Arlt's most frightening creation, and a shocking prefiguration of Juan Peron, 15 years before anyone had heard of the dictator-to-be.

During his lifetime Roberto Arlt (1900-1942)—novelist, short story writer, newspaper columnist, and playwright—was admired by the reading public but scorned by the critics.
Arlt’s novel (originally titled Vida puerca) is social realism and, at the same time, a pulp fiction parody of the mass-produced novel serializations of the period.
Arlt’s description of the market and its denizens affords readers a glimpse at the seamier side of life: poverty, unsanitary living and working conditions, and individuals of questionable moral character, such as the cart tender, Rengo.

For the characters in Roberto Arlt’s novel The Seven Madmen money represents the power to resolve all problems and satisfy all their wildest desires.
Ernesto Goldar argues that in the work of Arlt money is "universal power", and Ricardo Piglia asserts that Arlt’s characters are not only in search of money but the power of money.
He believes that it is the ultimate power, like divine power: "El dinero convierte al hombre en un dios." (Arlt, p 209) He says for example that John D. Rockefeller and Henry Ford are like gods because they have the power to destroy the moon or suppress a social revolution.

This study sees Arlt against the disturbed times in which he wrote, analyses his ideology and technique, and seeks to avoid as far as possible the dangers inherent in viewing Arlt the man at the expense of Arlt the writer.
Reference is made to the political, social and philosophical upheaval which took place in Argentina at this time for an understanding of Arlt's contribution to his age and an assessment of what he in his turn derived from his circumstances.
