  Robert I - Cunnan
Robert I (also Robert the Bruce) was the son of Robert de Brus, 6th Lord of Annandale, and of Margaret his wife, who was Countess of Carrick ion her own right, as heir to her father, the Earl.
He was born in 1274, and was therefore well aware of the kerfuffle when Edward I of England came north (with a sizeable army) to arbitrate the Scots succession after the death of Margaret, the Maid of Norway at the tender age of 6, uncrowned, but queen.
Shortly thereafter Robert's grandfather surrendered his claim on the throne to his son, Robert's father (they were all called Robert, by the way), who in turn resigned the Carrick earldom to Robert.

He was crowned King of Scots as Robert I at Scone, near Perth on 25 March, by Isabella, Countess of Buchan, (alleged by the English to be his mistress) who claimed the right of her family, the Macduff Earls of Fife, to place the Scottish king on his throne.

Robert’s childhood and youth were marked by poverty and hard labour, as a succession of crofts leased by his father chronically failed to provide the family with a living; and the poor health (stemming from a weakened heart) which marred his later life probably had its roots in the hardships of this period.
Equally a part of his formative years, however, was a sound education, at the local schools and from a tutor named John Murdoch, hired by his father and other farmers to give their sons private lessons.
