Robertsbridge - A short history   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Robertsbridge is a medieval village on the River Rother which dates back to 1176 when the only Cistercian abbey in Sussex was founded by Robert de St Martin.
Robertsbridge was quite a wealthy place in the 14th and 15th centuries when many of the buildings which still remain were constructed; and it is for this reason that the town has such a large number of Wealden Hall Houses.
Robertsbridge resides in the Parish of Salehurst (spelt Salhert -when mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book and which means willow wood), and the finest example of local light industry is the manufacture of cricket bats which are made at the old family firm of Gray-Nicholls, often utilising local grown timber.
