Shalom, Review of Hahnel   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Hahnel notes that "to assume that economic forces and class struggle are always most important is unwarranted, to reduce explanations of war, gender oppression, and racial discrimination to economic motives is untenable, and to demand that oppressed racial and gender groups always subordinate their struggles to the class struggle is unconscionable" (66).
Hahnel is not content to show that many people are suffering under capitalism; he aims to establish as well that the intrinsic workings of capitalism lead to unjust, undemocratic, and inefficient results.
Hahnel notes that the "golden age of capitalism" was primarily attributable to the influence of social democrats (109).

S/R 40: Review: Robin Hahnel, Economic Justice and Democracy (Richard Burke)
Albert and Hahnel have made a convincing argument that their model would achieve its aims efficiently and democratically while being able to handle the externalities, or social costs, which capitalist markets are unable to account for.
Libertarian socialists (and Hahnel identifies himself as one) had their greatest successes early in the 20th century when they were involved in de-facto reform efforts which laid the basis for later insurrections, such as in Spain in the 1930s.
Hahnel shows that these orthodox interpretations are incorrect and claims that the idea of a collapse of capitalism is a “debilitating myth” which postpones necessary efforts to fashion an alternative economic system to some indeterminate future.

Developed by Robin Hahnel and Michael Albert, and spelled out over the past decade and a half in a series of articles and books, "participatory economics," or parecon for short, is a detailed, specific model for a postcapitalist political economy--an alternative to both capitalism and state socialism.
In Hahnel and Albert's vision, the economy is governed neither by markets nor primarily by state regulation, but rather through participatory structures in which workers and community members, in local and regional worker and consumer councils, propose and refine plans for economic activity.
