Robin Hood exists in many forms, simply because his stories were first passed around by spoken word, in the form of folk tales and ballads dating back to the 1300's.
Robin Hood's tales are often heavily tied in with the absence of Richard I, the Lion Heart, who happened to be leading the Crusades at the time.
Robin Hood Bay near Whitby, for example, is where he is said to have gone fishing and to have stored boats whenever it was necessary to flee by sea.

Robin Hood was a dream project for dashing Douglas Fairbanks and he brought the full resources of his studio to the film, building the largest standing set ever for Prince John's magnificent castle and filling open plains with thousands of extras.
Although the jury is still out on just who the real Robin Hood was and when exactly he lived (he appeared on the scene anywhere between 1190 and the 1320s), this version of the famous story is the one that most people are the most familiar with.
While he does seem much older looking in the role of Robin Hodd than Errol Flynn did in the later version, Fairbanks has all the expected characteristics of the famed bandit down to perfection, and is as gallant, adventurous and full of energy as one would expect from the actor at his peak.

The basics of the immortal legend of Robin Hood are placed into an animal kingdom setting, and while the plot is rather simple (and at times, non-existent), there are many memorable moments that manage to hold the movie together.
Here, Robin and Little John are the only outlaws who run around doing mischief, which ties in really well that Robin is a fox, and Little John his big bear sidekick.
All in all, Robin Hood is a fun and silly adventure that's to be appreciated the way it is, with nary a moment that doesn't leave you smiling.
