A career in managing people was always Robin's dream, and her first opportunity brought her here to work for the Stanislaus County Personnel Department from 1983 to 1985.
Robin has maintained continuous participation in the International Personnel Management Association, and was a founding member of the Central Valley Chapter.
Robin served as Chair of the Northern California Personnel Managers Association and currently serves on the Executive Board of the League of California Cities Personnel and Employee Relations Department.

Business Report - Praise for SA's finance team
London - Lord Robin Renwick, the former British ambassador to South Africa, said this week he had high praise for the ANC's financial team, to which he referred light-heartedly as "a group of Thatcherite communists".
Renwick served as ambassador in South Africa from 1987 to 1991, during the crucial period of the unbanning of the ANC.
Renwick expected a resumption of growth after the elections of 1,8 percent, and possibly 3 percent next year, but nowhere close to the 6 percent targeted in the growth, employment and redistribution strategy.

Diamonds Are a Tyrant's Best Friend - Security Council - Global Policy Forum   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
I never imagined he would end up presiding over the most corrupt regime in Africa," said Robin Renwick, one of the chief architects of the Lancaster House agreement, which gave independence to Zimbabwe and, as it turned out, uninterrupted power to Mugabe and his Zanu-PF party for the past 22 years.
Renwick, later the British ambassador in South Africa and Washington, was one of the more vocal proponents of the European Union (EU) visa ban and assets freeze that were imposed this year on Mugabe and 71 of his associates.
Senator Feingold, who has met with members of Mugabe's inner circle, says Zimbabwe's "elite" had "strong incentives to retain power, regardless of the cost to the country", and it was difficult to avoid the conclusion "that public office is being used almost solely for private gain".

Four outstanding diplomats--Sir Robin Renwick, Britain's Ambassador to the United States; Warren Zimmermann, former U.S. Ambassador to Yugoslavia; Stanley Schrager, spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Haiti; and Ruth Yaron, spokeswoman for the Israeli Embassy in Washington--shared their views on the topic.
British Ambassador Sir Robin Renwick makes the point that while technology allows a prime minister to pick up the telephone and converse directly with a president, he "cannot do it all the time.
Renwick argues that ambassadors and other diplomats should not "quake" before the media and should bear in mind that history will judge leaders not by what they say but by what they do.

Partner to History: The U.S. Role in South Africa’s Transition to Democracy. Princeton Lyman
Unlike David Scott's Ambassador in Black and White (1981) and Robin Renwick's Unconventional Diplomacy in Southern Africa (1997), Partner to History is a substantial and important book, one that deserves to be read alongside Chester Crocker's account of the United States ' role in southern Africa in the 1980s, High Noon in Southern Africa (1992).
Lyman is holder of a Harvard Ph.D. in Political Science, and like Crocker and the present U.S. ambassador to South Africa, Cameron Hume, he has set an account of his experiences in southern Africa within a broad analytical frame.
He claims that in the period he was ambassador, following the departure of the dynamic British ambassador Robin Renwick, there existed ‘special opportunities' for U.S. influence (p.

The 2001 General Election, and the replacement of Robin Cook by Jack Straw, changed little, except that constructive engagement faded slowly into well-meaning inertia.32 During the election campaign the Prime Minister was filled by a sudden conviction that he had a destiny to save Africa.
As late as May 2001 Robin Cook was still rejecting calls for sanctions to be imposed.35 It was not until February last year that Britain and the European Union agreed on targeted sanctions - travel bans and a freezing of assets that applied to 20 government officials.

When South Africa’s whites-only government shut down the office of the bravest and most professional media opponent of apartheid, The Weekly Mail, 15 years ago, it was visited by Britain’s ambassador, Sir Robin Renwick, who arrived at the newspaper’s scruffy Johannesburg premises carrying a bag stuffed with banknotes.
It would help, said Sir Robin, if the South African government could be told the newspaper was delivered each week to Margaret Thatcher and she would not be pleased if she failed to receive it.
Harber, now professor of journalism at the University of the Witwatersrand, said he was breaking his secrecy pledge about the covert British payments for two reasons.

Over at the British Embassy, Sir Christopher Meyer had tough acts to follow in the shape of his predecessors -- Sir John Kerr, who currently is the civil-service head of the British Foreign Office, and Sir Robin Renwick.
The latter was an old-school diplomat -- the "starched-shirt type" to use British parlance -- who did much to repair damaged relations between then Conservative prime minister John Major's government and the Clinton White House.
Kerr, one of the most formidable of diplomats, did a remarkable job in swinging the embassy around after the GOP's 1994 congressional win, which had not been foreseen by Renwick.

But behind all the war chatter in today's Euro-press is a comment or two looking toward the more ominous threat of postwar maneuvers, diplomatic and otherwise, and, as in Robin Renwick's piece in today's Times, wondering what will be left of international institutions once the dust settles in Iraq.
What-happens-next, after all, is a problem compounded by the recent serious abuse of ideological hallucinogens by politicians in Europe.
