Crusoe, the latest interpretation of this saga, is more in keeping with Bunuel's version, and therefore the book itself, but it suffers from deliberate pacing and a shallow, uninspired viewpoint.
The twist here is that Crusoe is portrayed as a Virginian slave trader who journeys to the island of Guinea in the hope of purchasing low-priced captives.
Crusoe sets sail at an inopportune time of year, weather-wise, and it proves to be his undoing.

As the slightly goofy title suggests, the story of Robinson Crusoe on Mars is based on the novel Robinson Crusoe by eighteenth century author Daniel Defoe.
While the movie is effective in exploring the numerous and immense difficulties faced by a man fighting for survival in a harsh, dangerous environment (very intelligently adapted to an imagined Martian experience), it doesn't go as far as it perhaps could or should in exploring Kit's interiority.
The bottom line is that Robinson Crusoe on Mars can be pretty slow and boring at times, reminiscent of some of the worse moments of a movie like Marooned (a.k.a.

Monstervision.info Description for Robinson Crusoe On Mars
The original story by Daniel Defoe (1660-1731), who is also known for having written the first ghost stories in English literature, was so realistic, many readers were convinced that Crusoe was a real person and demanded that he be rescued.
Another amusing attempt to update the original Robinson Crusoe story was this Disney comedy/drama, about a U.S. Navy pilot (Dick Van Dyke) who ditches and gets his rubber raft to a deserted island.
There, he finds a NASA chimp who was also lost on a test flight, an abandoned German submarine, and his "Friday" turns out to be a pretty native girl (Nancy Kwan) on the run from her angry father - a Polynesian chief on a nearby island.
