At 9:20, Mary Robinson, the administrator of the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission, began her opening statement, describing to a hearing board why Ellis ought not be able to practice law anymore.
In court papers, Robinson calls the IRS allegation "absolutely false." She also says Ellis has been inconsistent in his 5th Amendment assertions, states further that there is no ongoing criminal investigation anyway, and says that while a 5th Amendment assertion is allowed, an inference can be drawn from it.
In Ellis' hearing, the witnesses included a vice president of Bank Leumi, an operations manager from A.G.  THE ROAD TO THE ELLIS STORY
After Ellis won a Pulitzer Prize in April, a decision was made to pursue the story sooner rather than later.
At the end of May, Robinson sent 30 e-mails to students at Mount Holyoke to say he was researching a piece on Ellis.
On the night before publication, a spokesman for Mount Holyoke, Kevin McCaffrey, insisted to Robinson that a professor of constitutional law at the college judged Ellis a private individual and that it was wrong journalistically and legally to publish anything he said in a classroom about Vietnam.

 Ellis Island Pictures
Ellis Island, located in New York Harbor at the mouth of the Hudson River, was at one time the main immigration port for immigrants entering the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Ellis Island is also known as a place where people changed their names; however, this is largely legend.
Ellis had told stories to students in his classes and to reporters about his overseas tour of duty in the Vietnam War (he served in uniform in America but did not go to Vietnam) and about his efforts as an anti-war and civil rights activist (all apparently fictional).

Ellis, she recalled, told the class that he was in an infantry unit that cleared out areas near My Lai in the period shortly before a unit of the Americal Division murdered civilians there on March 16, 1968.

"" by Ellis Parker Butler from Robinson Crusoe and Thrift Stamps
Services such as these were of value to Robinson Crusoe, and so were goods; such as the coat he made and the potatoes he raised, but silver dollars and quarters and dimes were nothing but circular pieces of metal that would get lost in the sand and be of no use to anybody.
Now, Robinson Crusoe, when he made himself a goat skin coat instead of making chocolate creams and chewing gum, was a wise man. But suppose he was rescued from the island, as he was at last, and came here to the United States to live, and the United States was at war with Germany.
Robinson Crusoe would not care, but, as the war went on, the United States government that is trying to win the war would care.
