Robley Dunglison Evans, born 18 August 1846 in Floyd County, Va., was a member of the Naval Academy class of 1864, ordered to active duty in September 1863.
Commander Evans was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his material contribution to the decisive victory won in Leyte Gulf and shared in the Presidential Unit Citation awarded his group for this action in which he gave his life.
Evans cleared Ulithi 21 March 1945 to screen escort carriers in preinvasion air strikes on Okinawa and served with them through the 1 April assault and until 2 May, when she put in to Kerama Retto.

Born on 18 May 1907, Evans was from 1934 to 1938 an Assistant Professor, from 1938 to 1945 an Associate Professor and from 1945 a full Professor of Physics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Robley Dunglison Evans was born in Floyd County, Virginia, on 18 August 1846.
Evans distinguished himself during the ground assault on Fort Fisher, North Carolina, in mid-January 1865 but was badly wounded.
His injuries, which troubled him for the rest of his life, led to Evans' retirement in May 1866, but he was returned to active duty in the rank of Lieutenant early in 1867.

The grandson of Robley Dunglison Evans (Evans' daughter was named Virginia Evans Seawall).
He is buried in the Evans site in Section 1 of Arlington National Cemetery and his name appears on a footstone there.
In Robley Evan's 2nd autobiography, "An Admiral's Log", he writes that after having given up command of the Atlantic Squadron in San Francisco due to illness, members of his family came to escort him back east.

The first Evans (DD-78) was launched 30 October 1918 by Bath Iron Works, Bath, Me.; sponsored by Mrs.D. Sewell, granddaughter of Rear Admiral Evans and commissioned 11 November 1918, Commander F. Sadler in command.
Through the next 2 years, Evans joined in a training schedule which found her ranging the eastern Pacific from Valparaiso, Chile, to Astoria, Oreg.
On 21 September 1940, she sailed from Key West for Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she was decommissioned 23 October 1940, and transferred to the Royal Navy in the land bases for destroyers exchange.

Robley Dunglison Evans, 1907-1995, B.S. 1929, Ph.D. 1932 in physics, California Institute of Technology, came to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1934 as an assistant professor of physics, where he began the first course in nuclear physics in the United States.
He was awarded the Enrico Fermi Prize in 1990 for pioneering work in nuclear medicine, in measurements of radioactivity in the body and its effects on human health, and in the use of radioactive isotopes for medical purposes.
Evans wrote more than 200 articles and book chapters and the 1955 textbook The Atomic Nucleus.

One possibility is that Dr. Evans was overconservative back in 1941 when he set the safe "maximum permissible body burden" of radium at one ten-millionth of a gram.
But if Dr. Evans was overconservative then, it was a good fault: after the haphazard misuse of radium only a decade earlier, a strong corrective was needed.

His voice was the first ever to be transmitted by radio waves and heard by another person.
On Dec. 16, 1907, the first singer to broadcast was Eugenia H. Farrar, whose voice was broadcast by Lee De Forest from the Brooklyn Navy Yard on the occasion of the departure of Admiral Robley Dunglison Evans ("Fighting Bob Evans") on a cruise with the fleet.
On Jan. 12-13, 1910, Lee De Forest arranged the world's first radio broadcast to the public, directly from Metropolitan Opera to several listeners in New York.

In Floyd was born Robley Dunglison Evans (1846-1912), commander of the USS Iowa at the Battle of Santiago Harbor, 1898, who, after his appointment as rear admiral in 1901, commanded both the Asiatic (1902) and Atlantic Fleets (1905-08).
The brick FLOYD COUNTY COURTHOUSE was erected in 1845, replacing a log cabin \par that housed the first meeting of the court soon after the formation of Floyd from Montgomery County in 183 1.
First called Abbeville, honoring the South Carolina birthplace of Jesse Evans, the settlement was legally established in 1792 as Evansham, a name that clung until its incorporation in 1839.
