 Robotics Institute turns 25 - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
The Robotics Institute was established in 1979 when now-retired Westinghouse Electric Co. senior executive Thomas J. Murrin returned from Japan and realized that U.S. manufacturers had a lot of catching up to do.
But programming a robot to sense and interpret the world as a human would and act appropriately is an enormous design challenge, said CMU robotics professor Reid Simmons, an expert in artificial intelligence and the development of social robots.
Robotics experts from around the world will gather at a symposium to explore the future of robotics and discuss the challenges of creating a positive, fruitful coexistence between robots and humans.
