The City of Rochester is at the center of a larger Metropolitan Area which encompasses and extends past Monroe County and includes Genesee County, Livingston County, Ontario County, Orleans County, and Wayne County.
Rochester is home to a number of cultural institutions including the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film, the Memorial Art Gallery, the Rochester Museum of Arts and Sciences, the Strong Museum, the Strasenburg Planetarium, and numerous arts organizations.
Rochester is east of Buffalo and west of Syracuse.

The father settled in Monroe county, New York, in 1849.
John Desmond, practicing at the bar of Rochester, his prominence indicated by the fact that he is vice president of the New York State Bar Association, was born in the town of Parma, this state, April 15, 1854, his parents being Bartholomew and Nancy (Foley) Desmond, both of whom were natives of Ireland.
His standing among his professional brethren is indicated by the fact that they have honored him with election to the office of president of the Rochester Bar Association, in which position he served from December, 1904, until December, 1905, while at the present writing he is vice president of the New York State Bar Association.

 Jane Read Drake Thompson
Thompson's fourth wife, Susan, died in Monroe County, New York in 1882, she was about 62 years of age (Jocelyn Hubbard, Personal Communication, 2000).
It is interesting to note, that another one of her brothers, Abraham Newman, was a Methodist Episcopal minister in Warren County during the period that Thompson was pastor of the Johnsonburg Christian Church.
The first church was located in the eastern portion of the town of Broadalbin in Montgomery (now Fulton) County.
